A Closer Look at Interactive Timelines

Free interactive timeline tools like Timetoast and Dipity can do more harm than good when misused. Often, a chronology is confused with a timeline, making it harder for readers to consume your information. Here's the difference:

Timelines should illustrate how time influenced events. The space between events should be as important or more important than the events themselves.

Chronologies explain how the order of events shape or influence a story. When a chronology is made into a timeline, it often becomes harder to read and understand.
