October 15 KDMC to Join in NorCal Guild's Fall Tune-up Training Workshop

KDMC will lead a track of training at the October 15, Fall Tune-Up for Journalists conference that will offer participants tips on how to optimize their writing for the web, a primer on essential web concepts and terminology, and using Google and Social Media tools to source, report, and create easy-to-achieve interactive elements that enrich reporting. The conference will be hosted at City College of San Francisco. It is sponsored by the Pacific Media Workers Guild and The Newspaper Guild of Northern California.

Most of our trainings are funded by John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Ethics in Excellence in Journalism, but we occasionally create custom sessions for specific organizations. We're helping Patch regional editors go on to train local site editors in the arts of social media, engagement, community curation, making good use of photos, productivity, and more. These sessions will not be webcast or open to the public.

The career path for many of today’s journalists is merging with entrepreneurship. Journalists who once covered topical, feature and investigative news for established newspapers are becoming independent publishers of specialty blogs and hyperlocal community news sites. March 20-25 Independent Journalists Workshop

Powerful and easy to use Web publishing tools make creating quality online news sites easy and affordable. These new tools are allowing individual journalists and community journalism to flourish as part of the evolving news eco-system. One of the KDMC at UC Berkeley newest offerings is an innovative training workshop for journalists who have or are actively seeking to venture into online community or specialty news publishing. The Web Publishing for Independent Journalists Workshop will provide journalists with the hands-on training and tools to get started with an online publishing enterprise. More info

December 12-17 Census Workshop

The KDMC at UC Berkeley is offering a customized visual storytelling workshop to train journalists on new ways to process data from the 2010 Census. Fellows will illustrate the information using visualization and mapping tools to create a clearer, more meaningful picture of the complex statistics gathered in the national survey.
