About Julia Schmalz

SCHMALZ, JULIA is the assistant director of photography at USA TODAY. Her duties include developing visuals for cover stories, coaching 15 photo editors, publishing online photo galleries and training in video storytelling. Previously, she worked in sports and oversaw photo logistics for major sports events including the 2006 and 2002 Winter Olympics, for which USA TODAY published daily bonus sections. She has a master’s in photography from Ohio University, a bachelor’s degree in geography from Macalester College and worked as a photographer for eight years before making the leap to editing. She lives in Northern Virginia with her partner and two dogs. She likes hiking, birding, kayaking. In 2007 they bought a 14’ sailboat and she plans on spending her free time (when she is not learning multimedia) learning to sail.
