About Tom Murphy
MURPHY, TOM is founder and editor of two early-stage companies, Newswire21.org and RedwoodAge.com, which both seek to blend the passion of citizen reporting with the best practices of traditional journalism. He led the Newswire21 pilot project that won the 2010 award for excellence in community journalism from SPJ. Murphy began his career as a reporter at community papers in northern and southern California. Later, he ran the news desk in the AP's San Francisco bureau, served as the first Bloomberg correspondent in Northern California, and became a key architect for MarketWatch.com as its founding managing editor. He has been editor in chief at RedHerring.com, Montgomery Research, Revenue magazine, Emerging Business magazine and infoUSA.com. Murphy leads San Francisco Bay Area Journalists (at Meetup.com/Journalism) and sits on the board of the Society of Professional Journalists in Northern California, where he chairs the Media Committee. He's an avid cyclist who's crossed the Sierra and ridden down the California Coast. Murphy lived across from the Hotel Durant while earning his journalism degree at Berkeley in 1975, but now makes his home among the redwoods of Marin County, on the western side of San Francisco Bay.
My only prior formal multimedia training was as Bloomberg 18 years ago, so this helped to fill many of the gaps that have appeared as technologies changed. This has been very beneficial to me personally and to both the nonprofit and for-profit web enterprises I manage. I'm particularly grateful for the generous help Scot gave to Newswire21 to resolve a programming glitch that we've been unable to understand on our own. That was above and beyond his mission, and will benefit our entire organization.
