About Andrea Coombes
COOMBES, ANDREA is an assistant personal finance editor at MarketWatch, a financial news website and part of the Wall Street Journal Digital Network. Based in San Francisco, Calif. Coombes writes features covering a wide array of personal-finance topics, including retirement, credit and debt, taxes, and career issues. She also creates video features, edits stories filed by staff and freelance writers, updates Web pages and compiles e-newsletters on various personal-finance topics. She recently spearheaded MarketWatch’s Retirement in Peril series, and she’s in charge of the site’s tax coverage. Her stories sometimes appear in the Wall Street Journal and other newspapers nationwide, and Coombes has won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and National Association of Consumer Advocates. She landed her job at MarketWatch 7 years ago, immediately after earning her master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. When she’s not cycling -- she recently completed a 2-day, 200-mile trip around the San Francisco Bay -- Coombes loves just hanging out with her teenage daughter. Other times, she and her husband embrace their geekiness with their newfound love of bird-watching.
