About Craig Porter

PORTER, CRAIG is the director of photography and video at the Detroit Free Press. Not quite a vertical blur, in his 34 years he’s moved up two spots on the org chart and now has his dream job. A summer intern in the photo department in 1975, he has worked as staff photographer, sports photographer, assignment editor, day slot editor, night/Nation/World editor, features editor, assistant director of photography/technology, deputy director of photography and director. Since 2000 he has been in charge of the day-to-day running of the photo and video department. Recently the department has taken on a partnership with the CBS station in Detroit to provide news headlines and video packages for an early morning weather/traffic/news broadcast. Porter has taught photojournalism at Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, spoken about the newspaper’s video success at Michigan State University and for Apple Computer at the 2008 Nexpo convention in Washington, D.C. The Free Press Photography and Video Department has won three national Emmys. It contributed over 100 video reports to the news organization’s recent Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting. Porter enjoys playing acoustic guitar and fly-fishing for trout in northern Michigan. He is married to Kathryn Trudeau. They have two children, Rekha, 19, and Devin, 22.
