GOEL, VINDU is an editorial writer at the San Jose Mercury News, the daily newspaper of Northern California’s Silicon Valley. Prior to joining the editorial board in October 2006, he was studying the impact of the Internet on newspapers as a Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. From 2003 to 2005, Goel was business editor of the Mercury News, guiding its nationally recognized technology and business coverage. He joined the paper in 1999 as an assistant business editor after eight years at the Plain Dealer in Cleveland, OH, where he reported extensively on state government, business and foreign affairs. He began his career as a consumer products reporter in the Philadelphia bureau of the Wall Street Journal. He graduated from Harvard University in 1989 with honors, receiving a Bachelor's degree in English. He has traveled widely in the United States and overseas, and he spends much of his free time hiking, tasting fine wines and taking road trips in his convertible.
