About Jake Batsell

BATSELL, JAKE is an assistant professor of journalism at Southern Methodist University. He teaches digital journalism, manages the Division of Journalism’s Convergence Newsroom and serves as faculty adviser to the multi-platform Daily Mustang. He previously worked as a general assignments writer for The Dallas Morning News, where he also shot and edited video as the metro desk’s “hybrid” reporter. Before moving to Dallas in 2004, Batsell was a business writer for The Seattle Times, where he was part of a reporting team that won the 2005 Economic Journalism Award from the Institute on Political Journalism. He also has written for the Chicago Tribune, San Jose Mercury News, Arizona Republic, Washington Post, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Austin American-Statesman. He holds a bachelor’s in journalism from Arizona State University and a master’s in government from the University of Texas at Austin.
