About Janice Rombeck
ROMBECK, JANICE is a former newspaper reporter and editor reinventing herself as an independent journalist. She devoted three decades to newspaper editing and reporting at two Knight Ridder papers. At the Wichita Eagle, she was a copy editor, education writer and copy chief. She moved to California to join the San Jose Mercury News staff in 1985 as a copy editor on the metro desk. At the Mercury News she was also a community news section editor, assigning editor and City Hall reporter covering neighborhoods. After being laid off from the Mercury News in 2007, she worked as a communications officer for the San Jose Redevelopment Agency assigned to a neighborhood improvement program. The economic downturn caused her to lose that job in 2009. Freelancing now helps pay the bills while she develops NeighborWeb, a Web site devoted to the community news that newspapers are no longer staffed to provide.
