About Julie Mccord

McCORD, JULIE is a text editor for the international editions of National Geographic magazine in Washington, D.C. She works with the editorial teams in 30 countries. Her responsibilities include editing any text that is created for the local language editions. Although she speaks Spanish and some Japanese, the editorial work she performs is on content that is translated into English. She also writes memos for the translators that explain idioms and tone for text produced for the US magazine in order to ensure accurate translations that maintain the author’s voice. Occasionally, she writes pieces for use in the international editions. McCord’s family is from Chicago, but she grew up overseas in Japan, Mexico, Panama, Canada and Jamaica. She graduated with a master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University. Prior to coming to National Geographic magazine almost four years ago, she wrote for Audubon magazine, Greenwire and High Country News, a biweekly paper that covers environmental issues in the Western states. She enjoys hiking, biking and traveling to all of the places she reads about for work.
