About John Cotey
COTEY, JOHN is the preps columnist at the St. Petersburg Times, a 345,000-circulation newspaper that covers a five-county area in Tampa Bay; primarily Tampa and St. Petersburg. His responsibilities include writing three to five columns a week on anything involving the 80 schools in the Times' coverage area, and hosting a weekly football webcast in the fall. The work he produced was one of the anchors of a Times web redesign in September that included the creation of The Hub, which recently was awarded the People's Choice Award by the PubliGroupe/INMA in their first Innovative Business Models Contest for business practices that challenged traditional revenue models. Cotey is a Cheesehead, and proud of it. He graduated high school in Milwaukee and attended college at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He walked into the USF paper looking for a gig as a political cartoonist, and walked out with a sport assignment. His first job was an eight-month stint at the Winter Haven News Chief, after which he was lured to the Times in 1993. Cotey enjoys (is obsessed with?) gadgets, Apple products and politics, but gets his biggest thrills from teaching his two young boys to swing a baseball bat.
