Janet Pickel recently became the online editor at The Patriot-News, a 95,000-circulation daily in Harrisburg, PA. She oversees the newspaper’s Web content (at www.pennlive.com), including news, sports, features, video and photo. She leads a group of journalists into a world that has nary a typewriter but plenty of video cameras, blogs and weird words such as “Twitter” and “Google.” Janet got her start in newspapers at 17, working as a municipal reporter at a weekly in Middletown, PA, for a couple of years before leaving town to get a journalism degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. After an unsatisfying stint in public relations, she returned to the weekly, becoming editor before leaving eight years ago to become an assistant city editor for The Patriot-News. In her spare time, she sends a lot of Tweets, takes a lot of pictures and cooks a lot of food.
