About Kevin Hessel
HESSEL, KEVIN is the assistant production editor, “design czar” and a copy editor at the Marin Independent Journal, a 35,000-circulation newspaper that covers Marin County in the San Francisco Bay Area. He recently redesigned the Independent Journal, and his responsibilities include designing Page One and the Business page of the paper, overseeing other sections to retain cohesiveness of design and style, and general management of the copy editing/design desk. Hessel also serves as the newsroom tech and new-media trainer, troubleshooting and maintaining the Macs while learning new software, writing in-house manuals and training the staff in new workflows. He is a native of Spokane, WA, but grew up in coastal Orange County, CA, before moving to the Bay Area in 1998 to attend San Francisco State University to receive his bachelor’s in journalism. He joined the Independent Journal in 1999 as a college intern. He enjoys politics, travel, live music, San Francisco’s fine dining, craft beer — and sleep.
