About Matthew Smith

SMITH, MATT is lead columnist at SF Weekly, the San Francisco publication of the Village Voice Media chain of local news and entertainment magazines. Smith's job entails researching and writing a weekly 1,500 word news essay, exposing malfeasance, folly, and other aspects of public life. Smith started as a staff writer for SF Weekly in March 1997, after three years as staff correspondent in Mexico City for Dow Jones International Newswires. Previously, Smith held positions at newspapers in Albuquerque, NM; Twin Falls, ID; and Fairfield and Sacramento, CA. He has worked as a special correspondent for the Bureau of National Affairs, and done freelance work over the years for several national magazines, newspapers and newswires. He holds a master's degree from the Columbia University, Graduate School of Journalism in New York, and a bachelor’s in political science from Reed College, in Portland, OR. In addition to his career in journalism, Smith has been an amateur and then a professional bicycle racer, living as a permanent resident at the U.S. Olympic Training Center before signing a pro contract with the G.S. Mengoni pro racing team. He was born in Berkeley.
