About Max Potter

Since joining 5280, the city magazine of Denver, in 2004, Maximillian Potter has written and edited many 5280 feature narratives and investigative reports. As a writer, he has been nominated for two National Magazine Awards in the categories of Public Interest and Reporting, and a finalist for the Medill School of Journalism's John Bartlow Martin Award for Public interest Journalism and for the prestigious Michael Kelly Award. Kelly award judges commented, "Potter's articles are hard to put down. They're beautifully written, ambitious in intent, and-most of all-fearless in their pursuit of truth." More recently Potter has been a finalist for a GLAAD award and for the national Investigative Reporters and Editors prize; and has been awarded the City and Regional Magazine prize in the category of Civic Interest, First Place for Domestic Coverage in the Military Reporters and Editors contest, and the American Bar Association's highest honor for legal reporting in magazines: the Silver Gavel.

Concurrently, as an editor, Potter has worked with dedicated writers. Those collaborations have earned several City and Regional Magazine awards, a Livingston finalist selection, and, in 2008, a National Magazine Award nomination in the category of Public Interest—marking 5280's third NMA nomination in four years. Folio dubbed Potter one of its "Publishing Innovators to Watch" and a "Top Talent." Before 5280, Potter was a staff writer at Premiere, Philadelphia and GQ. He has spoken at the Denver Press Club, the National Press Club, and appeared on television and radio programs such as ABC'S 20/20 and Colorado Public Radio's, Colorado Matters, discussing topics ranging from how to craft a magazine narrative to military justice. He lives in Denver with his wife and two sons.
