About Mayra Rocha

Mayra Rocha's avatar image ROCHA, MAYRA is a visual storyteller and a freelance television and multimedia journalist who covers national news and issues of importance to US-Hispanics. She is passionate about children’s issues and stories that make a positive change. She is a seasoned producer who has worked for “Univision Network”, the leader in Spanish-language news and entertainment. She was part of the top rated and Emmy-Award winning programs, “Aqui y Ahora” (Here and Now) and “El Show de Cristina” (The Cristina Show). Her responsibilities included traveling to remote locations in the US and Latin America, as well as writing, researching, and interviewing for such investigations as “Children and Drug Abuse”, “Lt. General Rick Sanchez from Iraq”, “Why Women Kill” and her 2010 GLAAD award winning story “Aging and Gay”. Rocha is a native of San Diego, CA and Tijuana, Mexico and graduated with a BS Science in Communications and majored in both, Broadcasting and International Studies from the University of Miami in Florida. One of her first jobs included working at Becon TV, a local network which provides educational programming to the South Florida Community where she became one of their first unofficial “one-man band” journalists, by writing, filming, editing, creating graphics, and recording voice-overs, while hauling her own equipment. She enjoys time with her family at the beach, going on bike rides and doing Crossfit training. She also enjoys food, culture and keeping up with the most current technologies. She feels at peace in urban settings and is blissful when she is roaming bookstores. This workshop was probably the most valuable training I have had other than my journalistic bachelor degree. This workshop will allow me to fulfill my dream of owning my own hyperlocal news website, which will serve my community of Miami beach. This workshop in all its entity was fully applicable to everything that I needed to do, but had not funds to train myself in the different areas.
