CHITTUM, MATT is the data delivery editor for The Roanoke Times, a 100,000-circulation daily paper covering southwest Virginia. He is the developer and proprietor of the paper's online data library, the DataSphere, which launched in late October 2007. The site runs the gamut content-wise, from citation fish data to public school enrollment figures, from a Virginia Tech football recruits mash-up to a database of recently uncovered graves in an old segregation-era cemetery for black Roanokers. Chittum is a Roanoke native and has lived all but about two years of his life there. He's been with the Times nearly 15 years, all of it as a writer until September, when he started the data gig. He's a devoted, if often injured, runner, and veteran of three marathons. He's also a semi-reformed punk whose iPod is loaded with old old tunes by Black Flag, Bad Brains and the Descendents, which he knows is rather pathetic given his age.
