Multimedia and Technology Training At the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism
Though fairly new to the business compared to many of my colleagues, I have spent my entire journalism career learning and teaching others about online journalism and multimedia.
After graduating from Kent State University with my journalism degree, I received a reporting fellowship with the local NPR affiliate to attend graduate school, where I first got involved in multimedia. I wrote my graduate thesis about developing journalism school curricula to prepare students for jobs in a digital news world (which I'm sure is already out of date!).
After graduation, I went on to be a news producer for JSOnline, the website for the *Milwaukee Journal Sentinel*. It was there that I learned the practical application of multimedia in reporting - and then had the chance to teach it to reporters and photographers. While employed there, I helped to develop regular podcasts, breaking news audio/video and the creation of several new blogs.
Now at the Cincinnati *Enquirer*, we are in the midst of an exciting movement to make the entire newsroom multimedia capable and operating under a "web first" mentality. In helping everyone else to learn these new technologies, I've had to learn a lot myself - especially hot to teach others! Everyone I meet who is close to my age asks me why I wanted to go into a business some say is dying. I tell them I want to help save it by learning (and teaching) constantly-changing technology.
