About Sara Steffens

STEFFENS, SARA is a freelance journalist and an organizer for California Media Workers Guild, which advocates for independent journalists as well as those employed in traditional newsrooms. She covers media and labor issues, maintains Web sites and social networking groups, and blogs about children's books. For nine years, Steffens worked as a reporter for the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek, Calif., where her beats included family issues and poverty. Her previous newspaper jobs included the Monterey County Herald (Monterey, Calif.), the Highline News (Burien, Wash.), the White Bear Press (White Bear Lake, Minn.), and a stint covering the Minnesota Legislature for the nonpartisan Senate Briefly (St. Paul, Minn.) Along with her husband, SF Chronicle photojournalist Mike Kepka, Steffens spends her spare time raising two daughters, ages 3-1/2 and 8 months. Her third baby girl is due in July.
