IRVINE, MARTHA is a Chicago-based national writer for The Associated Press. She covers issues relevant to young adults and teens, from trends to social issues, and spent much of 2007 working on a major AP investigation of sexual misconduct among educators. She’s also recently dusted off old sound-mixing skills to help produce audio slideshows. Irvine has a bachelor’s in English from the University of Michigan. Her journalism career started at newspapers in Australia and New Zealand. She later worked at publications in Michigan and Minnesota, and earned a master’s in journalism from Columbia University. After traveling on a fellowship and publishing stories from Mexico, Cuba and Thailand, she joined the AP in Portland, OR in 1995. Outside work, she enjoys family time, travel to destinations off the beaten path, growing basil and other goodies in her garden, kayaking, Scrabble, and anything Mac-related, including making DVDs and “mix-tape” CDs for friends and family.
