About Patricia Nazario
Patricia is an award-winning broadcast journalist. Over the past 12 years, she’s received national and international recognition for her insightful, sensitive and provocative story telling. Born in the Big Apple and partially raised in the City of Angels, Patricia started her career behind the scenes at a local TV news station in Los Angeles. She worked as a television anchor/reporter for several years Upstate New York and in Central Florida.
Patricia was in the graduate journalism program at Columbia University in New York City when terrorists attacked the Twin Towers on September 11th, 2001. She began filing radio reports about the tragedy and its aftermath for WFUV at Fordham University in the Bronx. That was her introduction to National Public Radio.
After graduating from Columbia, Patricia moved to Argentina. The country was in the midst of its worst-ever economic, social and political crisis. She filed reports for National Public Radio, NPR’s daily business show, Marketplace and The World (co-produced by the BBC World Service). She was based in Buenos Aires for a year and a half and traveled across South America: She ventured into one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Bogota, Colombia to interview rap artists and she backpacked through Guayaquil, Ecuador to talk to children who work full-time on banana plantations.
One listener had an especially strong reaction to a story Patricia did from Buenos Aires about Cartoneros. They push oversized shopping carts around wealthy neighborhoods looking for recyclable carton. The listener was well-off and wanted to become their benefactor. He set up individual bank accounts in the U.S. and traveled to Argentina to hand deliver ATM cards to Patricia. It took her weeks of roaming around some rough parts of town, in the late-night hours, before Patricia tracked them down again!
