About Peter Hecht

HECHT, PETER is a senior writer for The Sacramento Bee covering California and regional issues. He authors the newspaper’s blog, Weed Wars – Dispatches from the California Marijuana Front. Hecht previously was The Bee’s political writer and served as its Los Angeles bureau chief. He has won first place honors for feature writing, immigration and minority affairs reporting in the Best of the West journalism awards. He has reported extensively from Latin America. In 2003 and 2004, he was a Knight International Press Fellow at Universidad Peruana de Ciencia Aplicadas in Lima, Peru, teaching university courses in investigative reporting and conducting training seminars for professional journalists in Peru and Mexico. He holds a master’s degree in Latin American and international studies from California State University, Sacramento, and earned a graduate certificate as a James Irvine Foundation fellow in international journalism at the University of Southern California.
