About Ryan Van Lenning

Van Lenning, Ryan is a freelance journalist for various outlets including Oakland Local, Terrain Magazine, and Truthout. He covers issues related to sustainability, urban agriculture/food justice, politics, and community organizations. A transplant to the Bay Area from the Midwest, he comes to journalism after teaching in the Humanities Department at a community college in Ohio for 5 years, then working in the non-profit world. Van Lenning holds degrees in philosophy (B.A.—Indiana University) and humanities & comparative religion (M.A.—Miami University of Ohio). He serves on the Board of Directors of Planting Justice and is active in the Bay Area's peace and food justice movements. When he’s not engaged in ink-slinging, traveling, or social change-making, he can be found sipping yerba mate, organic gardening, scuba diving, and exploring California’s abundant natural beauty.
