I've got my practical list of five requirements for an acceptable all-purpose digital camera.
1. High-Resolution / High Quality.
Megapixels and high-end image processors are cheaper than ever. There's so many great cameras out there...you don't need to compromise quality. All-purpose digital cameras are supposed to travel with you to see great places and do great things. Why would you want mediocre pictures of your great adventures?
2. Compact, but not too compact.
High end camerasa tend to be huge. Too big, actually, to take them with you on an adventure. All-purpose digital cameras need to fit comfortably in your pocket, so they are ready for anything. You don't want to miss a shot because you were digging around for it. On the other hand, tiny cameras are usually just tiny to make a fashion statement. We don't want tiny, just pocket sized.
3. Tough, Rugged, Dependable, Waterproof
All purpose digital cameras need to be survive spills, dampness, cold, blazing sun, glove boxes, and kids with sticky fingers.
4. Cheap
No matter how high quality, tough, or compact the a camera is, it may not last forever. You could leave it somewhere, accidentally drop it in the river, or have it stolen on a trip. Don't skimp on features, but you don't need the most expensive camera in the store either!
5. Clear, Big LCD Display
Face it, you are using these cameras everywhere. Outdoors, day and night, in the glaring sun, and late into the evening. You want to be able to see how the shot is going to be framed. Plus, it's no fun to share with others during the trip on a tiny screen, right? Opt for a biggest LCD display in your price range!
