About Zack Johnson
JOHNSON, ZACHARY covers San Joaquin County government for The Record in Stockton, CA. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, and he commutes in the opposite direction of thousands of county residents who moved to the county in droves to take advantage of lower housing prices. The influx changed the county, adding growing bedroom communities to the areas between Stockton’s urban core and the shrinking agricultural lands that surround it. The effects of the housing boom and the bust that followed are just some of the stories on the county government beat, which also includes an overcrowded jail, a growing airport, an elections office adjusting to shifting voting rules, a diverse population and the estuary that provides California with much of its water. Johnson received his master’s degree from UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism in 2005. That commute he mentioned gives him a chance to listen to more music than he ever did as an undergrad.
