Greeting guests, filling out intake forms, stocking shelves and preparing giveaway boxes are among the tasks handled by volunteers, freeing up the two-person, paid staff for other essential duties at the Alameda Food Bank, which is open five, sometimes six, days a week.
For many reasons, volunteers say, their acts of charity and outreach are personally gratifying.
"I just don't like the idea of people going hungry," volunteer Archie McCabb says.
And Carol Ryan reflects, "I started here when I was out of work myself. I'm working now but I know I'll be here collecting some day... I'm paying it forward."
