What's wrong with what we eat?

Joining Up

After years of writing cookbooks and recipe guides, Mark Bittman has joined the likes of Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollen as a critic of the American diet.

Bittman's not advocating vegetarianism, but he does think Americans eat too much meat.  Over the 20th century, the average American nearly doubled his meat consumption.  As of 2008, the average American consumed more than 214 pounds of meat in a year.

Bittman made his career as a writer of recipes and cookbooks.  The map below shows a few key spots in his life and career.  Now Bittman's more concerned about the effects of factory farming on the environment and our health.
