After years of writing cookbooks and recipe guides, Mark Bittman has joined the likes of Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollen as a critic of the American diet.
Bittman's not advocating vegetarianism, but he does think Americans eat too much meat. Over the 20th century, the average American nearly doubled his meat consumption. As of 2008, the average American consumed more than 214 pounds of meat in a year.
