Creative Growth

Creative Growth sparked a movement in the 1970s for artists with disabilities. The Oakland-based center has blossomed into a studio and gallery with international reach that today remains focused on the craft while nurturing artists to create, connect and inspire.

Hip-Hop Heaven

Going Green

Berkeley's Bells

Since medieval times, bell towers have been used to simply mark the changing hour or mark life-changing moments.  The bells at U.C. Berkeley celebrated their own milestone in 2008, with a festival that drew carillon afficionados from around the world.

An Oasis of Biofuel

Amid growing environmental concerns, the women who own and work at BioFuel Oasis are making it easier for people to make the transition to an alternative fuel source. The cooperative was founded in 2003 to provide greater access to biodiesel, a renewable fuel that reduces harmful tailpipe emissions while keeping with their values of sustainability, local production and community.

Disabled on Bikes

Car accidents, gunshot wounds and arthritis have put them in a wheelchair. At the Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program in Berkeley, Arthur, Francisca and many others  get back on a bike.
