Professional Portfolios for Storytellers

A clean, well-designed portfolio showcases your skills and accomplishments to potential employers and clients, providing a necessary step in landing your next gig. 

In this course, you'll build a portfolio to showcase your body of work. You'll learn best practices for web design and identifying your brand, plus the foundations of functional user navigation. Working alongside other creators, you'll gain valuable feedback from your instructor and other professionals.

Course Outcomes

  • Understand how the principles of graphic design work to convey meaning, including how to arrange elements for their greatest impact.
  • Gain best practices for color and typography.
  • Make considerations toward creating greater accessibility in your content. 
  • Evaluate and use website building platforms to create your portfolio. 
  • Design and build a portfolio website that showcases your work in audio and/or visual media (podcasts, photography, video, and/or data visualization), and incorporates your personal brand style. 
  • Earn a certificate (PDF) upon completion of the course requirements.
  • Receive a LinkedIn badge to add to your profile to signify accomplishment of the course.

Richard Koci Hernandez

Richard Koci Hernandez is a UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism faculty and a national Emmy award winning video and multimedia producer. His work has appeared in Time, Wired, The New York Times, a National Geographic book and international magazines. He has taught multimedia workshops for Stanford University, National Press Photographers Association, The Southern Short Course, and National Association for Black Journalists, among many others. Syllabus & Course Format

Course Format

This online production course is self-paced with hands-on, interactive learning activities designed to build your skills as you progress through the course. Learning activities include videos, tutorials, audio, slideshows, discussions, and assignments.

Instructor will provide individual feedback to course participants on the final portfolio.

The course is designed to be completed in 28 days with 2-3 hours of work per week.
